The Sweet Taste of Success: Ice Cream Competitions and Awards
The ice cream industry is not just about creating delicious flavors and satisfying sweet tooths; it's also an industry where ice cream makers show high levels of creativity and competition. Accordingly, ice cream makers across the world, from large companies to small artisanal producers, gather to showcase their best creations in various industry competitions, vying for prestigious awards that recognize excellence in flavor, innovation, and quality.
Major Ice Cream Competitions
Every year, the North American Ice Cream Association (formerly known as the National Ice Cream Retailers Association, NICRA) holds an annual convention, Conecon. Conecon is the largest ice cream and frozen dessert trade event in the United States. Participants of the National Ice Cream Clinic submit ice cream samples to be analyzed and scored in six categories by Cornell’s Dairy Extension Team. Ice cream makers also compete for Flavor of the Year and Non-Dairy Flavor of the Year. Conecon 2024 will take place in Savannah, Georgia, on November 12 – 15.
The Ice Cream Alliance (ICA), a UK trade association, also organizes an annual event, the Ice Cream & Artisan Food Show. It is the only ice cream-specific trade event in the UK. This year’s Ice Cream Expo occurred in Yorkshire on February 6 – 8. The event celebrates the winners of the National Ice Cream Competition. Participants have their ice cream judged blind by experts in eleven categories (e.g., Newcomer – Vanilla, Open Flavour, 1st Sorbet Class).
Moreover, the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) hosts annual the Ice Cream Technology Conference. The conference includes the annual Ice Cream Flavor Competition which features three categories: Most Innovative Ice Cream Flavor, Most Innovative Ice Cream Novelty, and Most Innovative Prototype Ice Cream Flavor. Awards are given to the first, second, and third-place winners in each category. The winners are selected by the conference attendees, ice cream and frozen dessert professionals. This year’s Ice Cream Tech took place on April 9 – 10, in Clearwater, Florida.
