MAGIC Color Changing® Products
Color-changing products have always been popular but they’re even more on trend with the introduction of Jet-Puffed’s limited edition color-changing marshmallows and the color changing BMW prototype car that was the hit of the Consumer Electronics Show. The world’s first color-changing marshmallows start out pink and turn orange while the blue marshmallows turn green when exposed to a flame for 10 seconds. The world’s first color-changing cars from BMW can change colors with the touch of a button. Food & Wine says that color-changing foods are a major trend in 2023, citing color-changing noodles, cereal, and spirits.
We’ve long known that color-changing products are exciting, fun, and eye-catching. Back in 2012, we started Frozen Solutions with one first-to-market product, our MAGIC Color Changing® spoons. Today, we are the industry-leading supplier of MAGIC Color Changing® spoons and we’ve expanded the line to include MAGIC Color Changing® straws, bowls, cups, water bottles, and more. And our MAGIC Color Changing® product line is proudly made in the USA.
How MAGIC Color Changing® Products Work
As pioneers of color-changing products, we’re here to reveal how they work, without giving away our trade secrets.
While the color-changing spoons seem to change colors magically, the process behind the color is similar to how any plastic is colored by using a masterbatch. A masterbatch is a solid or liquid additive used to add color or other properties to plastics. The Color Changing® Masterbatch uses a thermochromic pellet containing leuco dyes which change color reversibly when the temperature changes.
Thermochromism refers to the phenomenon of a temperature-sensitive compound that changes colors when heated or cooled. Leuco dyes are organic chemicals with molecules that reflect light when the molecules shift back and forth due to a change in temperature. It takes a temperature change of about 5oF degrees for leuco dyes to change color.
The color you see is the color that is reflected in the form of wavelengths. So, if you see red, red wavelengths are being reflected to your eye’s retina, and the other wavelengths are absorbed by the paint. The retina is covered by millions of light-receptive cells that send signals to your brain when light is detected. It is your brain that interprets and names colors.
